Field Notes.

From the notebook

Three things to notice.

Spaces

Making room for less

Before adding anything to a room, take a moment to see how light moves across it. A chair near a window, a shelf within reach and a clear path through the space often do more than another decorative object. Give each corner a purpose and leave enough room for that purpose to feel natural.

Materials

The character of wood

Natural materials are never perfectly uniform. The grain in a table tells you how it grew; the worn edge tells you how it has been used. Regular care and a willingness to accept small marks can keep a useful object in service for years.

Everyday

Rituals worth keeping

A habit can be practical without being hurried. Open the curtains before checking a screen. Take a short walk at lunchtime. Put tomorrow’s first task on paper before ending the day. Small, repeatable choices give an ordinary week its own rhythm.
